Railway afternoon with Unilever

Corbrook Park Nursing Home enjoyed a unique afternoon of reminiscence in conjunction with Unilever Food Solutions to offer a free Active Minds sensory reminiscence box in exchange for the afternoon of memory sharing with the residents.

The reminiscence box had a ‘Railway Journeys’ theme which was presented to the residents by a representative from Unilever. The pack included a variety of items such as a map of the British Isles, postcards, a CD containing train sounds and some small containers holding smells associated with steam trains which aided the reminiscence.

Also included in the box were some cards containing traditional recipes that would have been found on past train journeys which our Executive Chef Paul was more than happy to recreate. The recipes included a Kentish beef and ale pie and a Whiskey loaf cake which went down very well with the residents!

During the afternoon residents came together to recall the days of steam train travel and share old stories about relatives who worked on the railway and journeys they once had. A popular topic for discussion was the Beeching cuts to the railway lines in 1963 which some residents remembered very well.

All six of our homes now have one of these boxes to use as and when they wish, which will really have a positive impact on the reminiscence activities that take place in the home.
