Preparing for end of life care

There’s a saying that we only have one life to lead so we need to get it right. The same is true for death. Talking about death may feel uncomfortable and a cultural taboo, but as providers of end of life care we know we have only one chance to get it right.

We have a strong belief that a high quality of care should extend right to the end of days and should be delivered by trained staff in a compassionate and sensitive way. This responsibility and indeed privilege to provide excellent care at every step of a person’s journey has shaped our approach to end of life care.

It means respecting the resident’s dignity and wishes, understanding their needs and keeping them and their relatives informed and working collaboratively with other professionals in a well-rounded and holistic approach.

Here are some tips on how to prepare for this difficult time:

  • Ask your care providers if a tailored and individual plan can be developed incorporating a care outline where food and drink, symptom control, and psychological, social and spiritual support is agreed, co-ordinated and delivered with compassion.

In Morris Care homes, proactive and kindly nurses and carers will put the person and their individual preferences at the centre of it all. Residents and people close to them will be involved in discussions on how they should be treated, cared for and how to emotionally prepare for end of life.

  • Good end of life care must include good communication. Makes sure your care provider listens to your smallest and greatest needs. If residents want their pet cat to sit on a bed near them or to spend some time in the garden, no matter how frail, their wishes must be catered to as much as possible.
  • Often some of the medical and clinical terms used can be overcomplicated so it’s important not to feel overwhelmed by the jargon. If at any time you feel this, then speak to a nurse manager and ask your questions. The Nurse Manager will be able to breakdown and dispel some of your concerns.

We appreciate that this may be the first time you will have experienced death and we are with you every step of the way.

Getting end of life care right needs to be as compelling as giving someone the best start in life. Why should the end of somebody’s life be treated any differently?

That’s certainly how Morris Care sees it and takes this responsibility and privilege seriously for Dying Matters.
