iPod Amnesty is Music to the Ears of Charity

Residents of Church Stretton are being urged to donate their unwanted iPods to help raise much needed funds for Severn Hospice as part of World Alzheimer’s month this September.

We are launching our appeal for old and unwanted iPods to be donated to the Severn Hospice shop on Sandford Avenue, Church Stretton. For each iPod gifted to the branch, we will donate £15 to the charity. This is the first of a community wide initiative that Home Manager of Stretton Hall Nursing Home, Jonathan Breese is keen to champion.

“Research has shown that music can soothe, stimulate and even bring back forgotten memories. This research links with our Cedar Philosophy by offering an alternative form of therapy for those residents living with dementia” Jonathan commented.

The Cedar Philosophy was developed by us alongside the University of Stirling as a way of focusing on an individual’s holistic wellbeing and personal needs, not simply their nursing requirements.

At the end of September, the iPods will be restored and filled with music from different eras and genres ready to be gifted to the specialist dementia unit at our Stretton Hall Nursing Home. The hope is that the memorable music from the past will help stimulate the brain and unlock memories connected with the songs.

As a local charity, Severn Hospice were keen to become part of a campaign that the whole community could get involved with and support.

Lucy Ruff, Fundraising Manager at Severn Hospice said: “When we first heard about the iPod Amnesty we thought it was a fantastic idea and was definitely something we wanted to get involved with to help raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease whilst raising funds for our charity. The idea that music can evoke long lost memories is fascinating and we are hopeful that this campaign will be a success for both the residents of Stretton Hall Nursing Home and Severn Hospice”.

The Amnesty is to be rolled out on September 1st with the donation box for iPods being housed at Severn Hospice on Sandford Avenue, Church Stretton until 30th September.
