A caring presence at the Abbey this Christmas

Shrewsbury Abbey is to host a special, heart-warming Christmas Carols Service created by and for the residents of our six care homes to celebrate in a traditional and personal style.

Over 200 invited residents, staff, family and friends will join in the festivities on Tuesday 13 December, with readings and music chosen by the Homes. Christmas songs from Shropshire Brass Quintet, mince pies and spiced shortbread will add to the seasonal flavour.

Waltraud Field, a resident at Corbrook Park Nursing Home in Audlem, has written a poem especially for the event, ‘My Heart’s a Christmas Tree’ which she will be reading in the Abbey.

Milly Shaw, 18, a friend of Shrewsbury’s Radbrook Nursing Home, will perform a solo rendition of ‘Ave Maria’ after her performance of ‘O Holy Night’ stole the show last year.

Service co-ordinator Sarah Compton, said: “Our first carol service last year was a lovely occasion, bringing people together to reflect on the meaning of Christmas and recall happy memories. It was so successful we were keen to do it again, involving residents in the planning and getting them to play an active part once more.”

Sue Anthony, a resident at Radbrook Nursing Home said: “I’m looking forward to the carol service because it was so special last year and quite emotional. The Abbey is such a beautiful church too.”
