Debbie Rees Social Life Coordinator - Isle Court

“My career journey with Morris Care started in 2009. I became a Steward at Isle Court not long after it opened. I applied for the role of Social Life Coordinator (SLC) last year and was delighted when I was offered the position, and started in December 2017.

I loved every minute of my role as a Steward, but life as a SLC is a great challenge with some very rewarding benefits. I am getting to know the residents on a completely different, more in-depth level and it’s giving me the chance to really express my creative side. Before Morris Care, I worked in the events and hospitality sector, so I believe I have something new and fresh to bring to the role.

Morris Care have been brilliant in regards to training, I have completed all mandatory training and have some really interesting training sessions coming up now that I am in the SLC position. I am particularly looking forward to Dementia Awareness training to expand my knowledge and the ‘Movement to Music’ training, so I can get stuck in with the fun. I can’t thank fellow team members (across all of the Morris Care homes) enough for all of their support and guidance through my transition to this new position, they are always at the end of the phone and they really want me to do well.

I think the most important characteristic that makes a good SLC is to be a great listener. It is so important to listen to residents and take their ideas on board, so we can then do our best to look out for their social well-being. Organisation and a creative mind are also great traits to have, thinking of interesting and exciting activities for the residents to do on a weekly basis can be hard but we need to ensure they aren’t repetitive or boring.

Seeing residents’ faces light up when we have the therapy dog in or we play some scrabble really makes my job worthwhile. If I can make just a small, positive difference to their later life care, then I am a happy woman.

If you are thinking about a career with Morris Care, I can’t encourage you enough. It is a lovely company to work for and really looks after you. I think working for the company for eight years speaks volumes! Morris Care really encourage career progression and development, they are a great springboard for your professional achievements.”
